Washing machine
Washing machine will not drain
Most drain faults are a blocked filter or a coin in the pump — both reachable without tools in many machines.
Before you start
Water and electricity: unplug first, and mop up before switching back on.
- 1
Switch it off
Unplug the machine at the wall before opening anything. Have towels and a shallow tray ready for water.
- 2
Open the filter
Find the small hatch at the bottom front, drain the water into the tray using the small hose, then unscrew the filter.
- 3
Clear the trap
Remove coins, hair grips, lint and anything else in the trap. Reach in and turn the impeller by hand to check it spins freely.
- 4
Check the drain hose
Look for kinks behind the machine and make sure the hose is not pushed too far into the standpipe.
- 5
Refit and test
Screw the filter back in fully, close the hatch, plug in and run a short rinse and spin cycle.
When to stop and get help
If the filter and hose are clear and it still will not drain, the pump or control has failed — call a technician.
