Printer
Printer jams, streaks or shows offline
Clear the path properly, clean what touches the paper, and fix the queue — in that order.
Before you start
Laser printer fuser areas get very hot — let the printer cool before reaching deep inside.
- 1
Power off and open up
Turn the printer off and open every access door, including the rear one, before pulling anything.
- 2
Pull paper the right way
Pull jammed sheets slowly in the direction the paper travels, and check for torn scraps left behind.
- 3
Clean the rollers
Wipe the grey pickup rollers with a slightly damp lint-free cloth so they grip paper again.
- 4
Reload paper properly
Square up a fresh stack, do not overfill, and set the tray guides snug against the paper.
- 5
Fix streaks
On an inkjet, run the head cleaning routine from the printer menu once or twice. On a laser, reseat the toner cartridge.
- 6
Fix offline
Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi from its own menu, then remove and re-add the printer on your computer or phone.
When to stop and get help
If it jams every few pages after cleaning, the pickup rollers or a feed assembly are worn. On cheap printers, replacement is often the better value.
