Game console
Game console shuts off after a few seconds
Heat and dust cause most sudden shutdowns. Rule those out before assuming the console is dead.
Before you start
Do not open the internal power supply. It stores charge and is not user-serviceable.
- 1
Give it air
Move it out of a cabinet or off carpet so every vent is clear, and leave a hand's width around it.
- 2
Clear the vents
Power off and unplug, then clear dust from the vents with short bursts of compressed air or a soft brush.
- 3
Test the power path
Try a different wall outlet directly, without an extension lead, and check the power cable is fully seated.
- 4
Watch the timing
Note how long it stays on and whether it feels hot. Instant shutdown points at power; shutdown after warming points at cooling.
- 5
Let it cool fully
Leave it off for an hour, then try again cold. Working while cold and failing while warm confirms a cooling problem.
When to stop and get help
If it shuts off instantly even when cold and in a different outlet, the internal power supply is likely at fault — that is a repair shop job.
